Fishing Trawlers

Fishing trawlers may lack the glamour of warships or ocean liners, but they are among the most important vessels ever built. They feed the world.

What Is a Trawler?

A trawler is a fishing vessel designed to drag a large net, called a trawl, through the water to catch fish. The technique dates back to the 14th century, when English fishermen first began towing beam trawls along the seabed. Early trawlers were sailing vessels, but by the late 19th century, steam-powered trawlers had transformed the fishing industry. The city of Grimsby in England became the largest fishing port in the world, with hundreds of steam trawlers heading out into the North Sea and beyond.

Modern trawlers are sophisticated ships packed with technology. They use sonar and GPS to locate fish schools, hydraulic winches to deploy and retrieve enormous nets, and onboard refrigeration to keep the catch fresh for days or even weeks at sea. Factory trawlers are the largest, processing and freezing fish right on board. Some of these floating factories are over 100 metres long and can stay at sea for months at a time, catching and processing hundreds of tonnes of fish before returning to port.

The Life of a Trawler Crew

Working on a fishing trawler is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Crews work in all weather conditions, hauling heavy nets in freezing spray, sorting the catch on a pitching deck, and sleeping in shifts in cramped quarters below. Despite the hardship, fishing communities have a proud tradition and a deep connection to the sea that stretches back generations. Many coastal towns around the world owe their existence to the humble trawler and the brave crews who sail them.

Fishing and Maritime Heritage

Fishing trawlers are a vital part of the broader story of humanity's relationship with the ocean. Understanding how we harvest food from the sea connects to geography, science, economics, and environmental studies. The Maritime Domino Game introduces children to the rich variety of ships that have shaped human history, building a foundation of maritime knowledge that makes topics like fishing, trade, and exploration come alive.
