The SS Great Eastern was one of the most ambitious and revolutionary ships ever conceived. Designed by the brilliant British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, she was launched in 1858 and was so far ahead of her time that no ship would match her length for over 40 years. At 692 feet long and weighing nearly 19,000 tons, she was six times larger than any ship that had been built before her.
